Narrative

The film Bound by Blood will be in a linear narrative as this construction would be the most clearest in terms of the audience understanding the film.

Equilibrium
The film starts off with the protagonist getting home from work and finding his house in a mess. He then after seeing the mess begins to call for his brother as he is expecting to see his brother at home, whilst there is no answer to the protagonist calling his brother, instead the protagonist receives a phone call.

Disruption
The protagonist answers the phone only to hear the unknown voice of the antagonist say that his brother has been kidnapped and the only was he can retrieve him is if he gives something in return, which in this case is all the business documents and contracts of all of his businesses. So the protagonist is ready to take this step and so does by packing his briefcase with all the documentation and contracts. After thinking for a while he begins to move and therefore leaves his house and reaches the location of the antagonist after using the bus to get to the specific location and at the same time looks at his brother’s pictures. As he reaches the location he walks into the dark room and immediately spots that a hostage has been tied to a chair with his head and face covered in a black plastic bag, who he presumably believes is his brother. The protagonist then signs the contract and hands them over to the antagonist. The antagonist then after a short while hits the protagonist on the back of her head and runs out of the room. The protagonist straight away gains his conscience and unties the hostage only to find out that it is not his brother. The protagonist then chases the antagonist. He tries to shoot but misses and then eventually the protagonist catches the antagonist and takes him to the ground…

New Equilibrium
Takes the mask off and to his shear disbelief, sees his brother behind this mask.

Costume, hair and Make-Up

The costume, hair and make-up associated with our short film are:
  • A smart business type suit worn by the Protagonist
  • The antagonist will wear jeans with a top, as well as a dark hat and a mask/balaclava to suggest that he is the criminal and that he has the  complete opposite personality of the antagonist
  • The hostage’s identity will be covered with a black, plastic bag

The Location

The different locations that we will tend to be using are:
  • The Media Studio within the college, which will be useful for lighting
  • Areas in Tottenham, as this location represents the social class of the antagonist
  • Protagonist’s House
  • Bus Stop
  • College car park

Camera
We will be using a variety of camera angles and shots within the scenes of the film, these specific camera angles and shots will be those of which are conventional to the genre of Action Thriller. The shots we will be including are shots such as point of view shots and we will also being using a lot of medium and long shots throughout the film. The angles we use will depend on which character’s perspective the camera is aimed at, this would signify which character has power over the other. We will also be using a lot of camera techniques such as panning and crane movements, as well as tilts. These techniques will have a great effect on the understanding of the film.

Sound
The sound within our film will mainly be diegetic as the film will mainly consist of dialogue, we will also being using background music, however this will also be diegetic as this is music that the character will be listening to which is eventually absorbed into the background as background music. We will be using a pitch equalizer to change the antagonist’s voice on the phone.

Editing
We will be using the software Final Cut Pro for editing, this is due to the fact that it will provide the best quality needed. We will be adjusting the font of the titles as well as adding credits. Our editing will consist of a variety of techniques such as sound effects while the gun is being used, we will also be using fast cuts to enhance the realism and continuity of the film. During the scene where the protagonist gets hit on the head with the gun, we will see the screen blur as he wakes from the perspective of the protagonist. We will also be using fast cuts during the chase scene to build to the effect. The voice of the antagonist is going to be modified so that the protagonist does not recognise it.

Description of Content
Bound by blood is a thriller/action short film which is about two brothers who live two different lives. One who is wealthy and owns many worldwide businesses and the other who is living in the shadow of his successful brother. The story escalates when the protagonist, in this case, the successful brother, return home from work and realizes that his house is in a mess and that his brother isn’t at home. Shocked, he tries to reassure himself by calling for his brother to make sure he is safe. To his relief, he receives a call from his brothers cell-phone, however, the person on the other line, is not his brother. Fixed to the voice of the caller, he learns that his brother has been kidnapped and he can only get him back if he paid a price.
Taking note of the significant details, the protagonist finds his brother but he is tied to a chair, with a bag over his face and a masked man holding a gun to his head. The masked stranger, requested that protagonist signed all his business contracts to him and in return he would free his brother, unharmed. Desperate to free his brother the protagonist signs all his wealth to the masked man. Suddenly, the masked man smashes his gun on the protagonist head, disorienting his concentration and fleeing.
The protagonist runs towards the hostage and he gratefully unties his brother. However, when he takes the bag off, he recognizes that it’s not his brother. Puzzled and losing hope for his brother’s life, the protagonist chases the masked man, avoiding oncoming rounds of bullets. Luckily, the masked man runs out ammunition and is charged onto the ground. Finally, the protagonist curious of who the stranger is, pull the mask of the man. To his disbelief, he is distraught to find out that it was his brother all along.

Purpose
The primary purpose of our short film is to entertain both the audience and ourselves; we believe we can achieve this because our storyline is similar to that of thriller and action genres. Our short film will also appeal to a mass audience who are highly entertained by this type of genre.
Our secondary purpose is to underline the fact that money can break even the strongest bonds within a family, in this case, the bond between two brothers who have supported each other since their father’s death.

Target audience
Our main target audience is aged in-between 15-24; this is because our genre is very popular amongst this age. Our audience is not fixed to a specific gender; however, we believe that males will be more interested in our film since it contains aspects of the action genre. However, in terms of the emotional status of the protagonist, the female members of our audience may feel more sympathy towards our main character.

Resources for Mise-en-scene

The Location

The different locations that we will tend to be using are:

  • The Media Studio within the college, which will be useful for lighting
  • Areas in Tottenham, as this location represents the social class of the antagonist
  • Protagonist’s House
  • Bus Stop
  • College car park

Problems likely to be encountered

Some of the issues we may encounter during the usage of such locations are the fact that for the Media Studio we will need to get permission as this is something that is under supervision. For the locations within the Tottenham areas and the bus stop we may tend to have issues with elements such as background noises and traffic at busy times. For the house we would not encounter as many problems due to the fact that it is the house of one of the crew members which will therefore act as a huge benefit.

Props

The props that will be used within our short film are:

  • A replicate gun used by the Antagonist
  • A briefcase for the paperwork
  • Pen and Paper
  • A rope used to tie up the hostage
  • Plastic black bag used to cover the hostage’s identity
  • Oyster Card to get on the bus
  • Chair

Costume, hair and Make-Up

  • The hostage’s identity will be covered with a black, plastic bag

Lighting

We will be using low-key lighting during the kidnapping scene. This will be accomplished using the media studio. This is the only scene in which we will be using the lighting to full effect, other than that, in the rest of the film we will be relying on natural light when we record outdoors. Also during the phone call we will be showing the antagonist under low key-lighting and at the same time will be showing the protagonist at home under low-key lighting.

Audience Profile

Audience Profile for Bound by Blood

Our primary target audience are 15-24 years old this is because the main actor will be representing a young business man aged in his 20’s. The person who will watch our movie will be interested in TV shows such as prison break and lost. They most likely enjoy other genres such as Gangster action and drama. Someone who enjoys watching movies at home by themselves will probably like to watch short movies when they get home from work. They will probably be working in a factory or in construction in a poor area such as Tottenham where we filming our movie. It will be aimed at both females and males. They will most likely enjoy hip hop and rap music as in most action thriller movies during action scenes the music playing in the background will be hip hop or rap. I think middle class people wouldn’t enjoy our movie as we are representing them in a negative way. Most likely enjoy playing video games during their free time, games such as call of duty and battlefield. The person will most likely be people of socio economic grade D/E.
